The great thing about Beale Street is there is a little something for everyone- places to grab a bite alone, have a great date night, or of course, spots to get drinks and act a little crazy with your friends (with no judgments). With that being said, it can be difficult to find the perfect venue for your needs with so many great options to choose from. I’m making it easy for you: make King’s Palace Cafe your next downtown destination.

I’ve been to King’s Palace at all times of the day or night and have had a blast every single time, but the best time to go is during the day. My most recent experience was two weekends ago, on a sweltering hot August day. I was showing my friend who was visiting for the weekend around Memphis and we finally ventured to Beale Street. I had one place in mind that would show my New Jersey friend what Memphis is all about- hot weather, cold beer, and gritty, soulful music. King’s Palace never fails to intertwine all three of those things effortlessly.

We happened to be on Beale during Elvis week, so amidst the cool, down-home vibe that Beale usually has on lazy summer days, we were also surrounded by crowds of Elvis impersonators and tourists sporting Elvis t-shirts and memorabilia, making Beale street even more diverse and exciting than usual.

We arrived at King’s Palace, grabbed a Big Ass Beer at the corner bar, spoke with a couple of Elvis impersonators who were already perched up there in polyester and rhinestone outfits and oversized sunglasses, and took a seat on the patio at a picnic table to enjoy the performance by Cowboy Neal the Real Deal and the rest of his incredibly talented band. These guys are typically the ones performing at King’s Palace and always put on a good show. They sing oldies but goodies and perform with soul and style, in true Memphis fashion.

We ended up sitting on the King’s Palace patio for a few hours, and it was the perfect way to show a newcomer how Memphians beat the heat and unwind, no matter what time of day it is.

The food at King’s Palace is also fantastic. They serve up fabulous southern dishes that make you feel like you are getting served a home cooked meal every time.

Don’t miss out on this little perfect little pocket of Beale Street, and make it your next stop next time you find your way downtown!
