wat1“What is this place called?” my friend asked.

“Whatever,” the naturally beautiful, tattooed young woman behind the counter responded without hesitation.

We looked back at her waiting for an apology or some sort of explanation for her rude response. Then she smiled and we realized that was in fact, the name of the store we were standing in, and that she (along with the rest of the staff at Whatever), was the complete opposite of rude, but instead, incredibly kind, helpful, and eager to share the awesome store with visitors and answer any and all questions we had.

I was drawn to Whatever in Overton Square when I peeked through the window and saw brightly colored tapestries hanging from the ceiling. Upon entering the shop, however, I realized that this was not your average home goods store: it was way better.

Whatever is a hippie dreamworld, with glass cabinets filled with smoking accessories of every shape, size, and color you could imagine. It also has awesome Memphis-themed and other categories, of original t-shirts, accessories, and home goods, ranging from hammocks, to candles, to incense, to jars, to posters, to lava lamps (and everything in between).

wat2Whatever is a Memphis staple, and has been located near the University of Memphis on Highland Street since 1971. The shop now has its second location in Overton Square, where owner Luke Sexton says, “has been a really fun location.” Sexton explains that being in Overton Square has welcomed a whole new set of customers to their business.

Whatever is a shop that you should visit no matter what you are shopping for because there is literally something for everyone, and even if you don’t end up buying something, it is a blast exploring the different apparel, home goods, and smoking accessories (whether you smoke or not), because of the sheer creativity that goes into the place. Whatever has its name because there, you can relax, enjoy yourself, and let go of your worries for a while, saying ‘whatever’ to your stresses and cares for the time that you shop around, meet awesome people, and discover a totally unique Memphis shopping experience.
